A Five-Year-Old's Explanation of Autism

Yesterday, Kiddo, his sister R and I went to the park at Lindsay Gardens, which is awesome because it is overlooking the enormous Avenues cemetery. We brought some sand toys, and a few other kids joined us in making "pod houses" and castles. One of the little boys, who was five or six, asked R if her brother could talk. Her response was pretty dang cute.

"No, he cannot talk. He has autism. Now let me... well, I'm going to tell you what autism is. It means he can't talk but likes to yell and laugh a lot. But he can use his Go Talk instead which means he talks with a computer sometimes, but not today because it would get sand in it and it would break and he'd be so sad. But we go 'do you want to listen to music?' and he goes "YES!" on his Go Talk and we listen to Johnny Cash and then he lays down and is so happy. But then he gets mad sometimes and pulls my hair."

Which reminds me... a few weeks ago, while Kiddo was asking for treats on his Go Talk, R sighed and informed me, "I wish I had autism. Then I could use my very own Go Talk!"

  3. It's great that R's explanation emphasised the feelings Kiddo has.

(Whether this transfers into whether other children with autism have feelings, I don't know).

  4. I'm really glad his siblings have developed the understanding that Kiddo is a complex, emotional being.
